The album's creation was deeply influenced by bassist Cass Lewis's battle with stage four cancer during the recording process. His experience adds a layer of emotional depth to the album, underscoring themes of resilience and authenticity. As Skin, the band's frontwoman, articulates, The Painful Truth confronts the band's identity and aspirations, making it a poignant reflection of their evolution.

The album was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Dave Sitek, known for his work with TV on the Radio
